Another Abandoned Childhood

they call it doom scrolling
and the world can’t seem to
get enough
what will they find today?
how far has the count risen?
there is something about
the brain
that makes you want more
of what youknow will only
pain you — deeply
or does it, truly make you grieve?
you use words like heartbreaking
+ disgusting + saddened
you say things like “I’m so sorry”
+ “I wish I could do something”
+ “Who will listen to me”
then you go back to the scrolling
the doom + the gloom + the images
you can’t turn away from
you click LIKE
maybe you add a comment
(see above)
you might even go so far
as to SHARE
but many in the world
have become desensitized to
the horror of it all
still, others shake their heads
as if to say
“if only October 7th didn’t happen”
but it did happen
and this didn’t start on the day
the Western world wants you to believe
it did
still, you keep scrolling
+ pretending you really care
you try to convince yourself
that those beautiful Brown babies
were innocent + they deserve
the same compassion you secretly
offer to the oppressor babies
those milky wh*te ones
you know, the ones born on the
right side of the Wall
the ones born to families
whose ancestors
survived the H-cost, the ones
whose lives matter
the ones who never had a home
until the Brits ‘created’ one for them
of course, you can pretend
you didn’t know any of this
but what does it matter
all you have
