Growing up with a single mom (we were 3 kids), I remember saying 'but mami, we're poor.' She'd give me that look (you know the 'look'), and firmly corrected me:

"Lola, we are NOT poor. You & your brothers to to school in clean clothes, we have an apartment, and you never go to bed hungry. So don't ever let me hear you say that again. Stop that nonsense talk!"
