Warning: contains language depicting domestic violence as witnessed by a child. It might be triggering — for this, I extend my heartfelt compassion. Reader discretion advised.

that cold kitchen floor
in its futile attempts
to gently cradle you

met with empty stares
glared at the 4 of us
¿qué carajo miran?

mami y el primo
softly begging
him to have mercy

pero el tío
blinded and deaf
to their pleas, continued

this precious little girl
afraid and helpless
with ununderstanding eyes

wondered why tío
yelled and kicked you
now you want a baby?!?

motionless, la niña stood
watching your hunched body
fetus within another fetus

Norma and el bebé
silently screaming
softly gasping for air
