Life has been throwing multiple challenges my way recently. Among them, financial troubles and romantic ones. Today is especially rough, so I decided to take a walk — breathing fresh air + catching pure vitamin D always works wonders.

Grabbing my water bottle, a mandarin, and my small pouch, I headed over to Paseo Julia de Burgos (named after one of our beloved poets). Since the Boricua sun was unabashedly showering its rays, seeking a spot in the shade was top priority.

Finding a spot on the part of the sidewalk that meets the side street where infrequent cars pass, I parked myself to have some quiet time — just me and my thoughts.

The Paseo faces the Río Grande de Loíza, so I sat gazing over at the river. Looking up over at the nearby bridge (Puente de Restauración), I spotted our beautiful flag. A brief smile greeted my lips.

Vitamin D works wonders.

My heart always sings when I see our precious solo-star bandera (I have zero doubt that in my lifetime the colonizers will leave and take their hideous freckled cloth with them!). But let me avoid digressing.

My ears took in every surrounding sound: los changos chirping as they flew by (grackles are ubiquitous here), voices chattering in…
