Growing up I remember this too.

My mother used this technique with her first grandchild. She would take a piece of thread from the baby's clothing, moistened it lightly with her tongue, and then make a little circle with the thread and place it on the baby's forehead.

We're Puerto Rican and that's one custom to this day, folks still use.
