¿Hablas Español?
A chance to learn
Bir dil, bir insan. Iki dil, iki insan
(One language, one person. Two languages, two persons)
~ Turkish proverb
In early 2009, I started taking Turkish beginner language lessons. For anyone [non-native speaker] familiar with türkçe, you know it’s quite a challenge!
Why türkçe? Because I was about to marry a Turk and it was important for me to be able to at least master conversational level to speak with his mother. Back then, her English was stronger than my Turkish.
I studied for nearly five years straight.
I came up with different ways to improve: in tango (there were (are) many Turkish speakers on the NYC tango scene!), official classes, with the Sesli Sözlük app, watching Netflix series, practicing with in-laws and with music.
For nearly five years, I stuck with it.
So, why do I share this? Because I’ve heard from so many people how they “wish they could speak español.” Then I ask, “so, what’s stopping you?”
I get much of the same response: no time, no money, lack of motivation. Some say they feel it’s “too late” for them. Other than the cost factor, the rest are just excuses.
