Can a novice writer really win?

This was my first challenge since joining Medium in June 2021. As a new contributor to the platform I found myself ecstatic at a chance to enter a writing contest. OK, let me be completely transparent: naturally, I was (and still am) hoping to win some cash!

To briefly recap, the four prompts were:

  1. Re-entry
  2. Death
  3. Work
  4. Space

Initially discouraged by the “expert panel of cultural leaders,” I almost opted out, but realizing I had nothing to lose, I chose to give it a go.
