Salt

Because love isn’t always soft & cuddly

to you,
a harmless & little word
a question impossibly innocent

unleashed in me,
a flood of anger & hurt
a reminder of childhood trauma

those eyes,
the ones I was lost in
blankly stared back into mine

my eyes,
searched yours for hope,
now looked at you differently

and in a few minutes,
daggers sprang from my lips
as you listened incredulously

your intentions
may have been misconstrued
but I only heard indifference

an ocean of doubt
filled the space in my heart
of your once permanent residence

a frigid blanket
replacing warm thoughts,
threatening to end it all

within me arising
a disappointing awakening,
turning sour the fruit of our love
