The Irish are some of my favorite people.
From their witty sense of humor to their warm, welcoming nature, to their love of folk dance, I have shared much laughter and smiles with these beautiful people. Whether back when I lived in the states, or traveling to their country (or any other country I’ve visited where I’ve met them), they are some of the kindest souls I’ve had the pleasure of meeting.
But, my affinity towards the Irish and their culture would be tested during my second visit. It was then that I found a new love.
An Estrangement
Raised Catholic, I used to be involved in church life: local community fundraisers, volunteering with vulnerable women, and attending mass. I was by no means devout, but my faith was a core part of me.
In the late 90s when I first heard about the sexual abuses against children, I began to disengage. I remember meeting with my favorite priest to share my pain and extreme disappointment. While exact details of that conversation remain blurry, one thing I recall is how he did not make excuses. He listened to me…
