When words heal.

Poetry is ordinary language raised to the umpteenth power.

When we first began dating, my lover and I would read poetry together. Usually in the evening time, as we lounged in bed, we’d grab one of our many books.

Analyzing verses, sharing our perspectives and dissecting metaphors, we connected on another level. We would select one piece, taking turns reading aloud and pausing in between to allow us both to take in the work.

It was one of the most memorable moments I have. We did it irregularly, but each time it was magical.

Then things changed.

As happens to many couples, our romance became routine. But we didn’t hold on to our poetry nights. It has been almost a year. And we’ve been fighting more often.

Several nights ago, I started thinking about how we communicate (or rather, our lack of communication) and realized that some things were missing in our relationship.

Reading to each other was one of the big ones.

Deciding to share my feelings, I reminded him about those times we used to read to each other. “Let’s get back to doing that,” I gently said.
