When I lived in Austin, I'd head to Houston for tango whenever possible. I remember one of the instructors frequentl use of the term 'man up.'
It turned me off, but since he and his wife were one of my favorite teacher-couples, and I had had plenty of conversation with them both, I never said anything about it, nor asked why he used it.
I could talk for days about the machismo mindset behind it. As a Caribeña who is intimately familiar with this mentally, I was curious as to why you chose to use it. Does it make him less of a man if he didn't approach you? And to be clear, I'm neither attacking nor criticizing you here. I too have questioned my own perspectives on the issue especially since I like a man to do some of the things that are expected in my culture (I identify as AfroBoricua) like hold the door open (tho I too will hold it open) and walk on the side of the street (ensuring I am not nearest the cars).
