WRITING TIPS

Write About What You Know

It’s really that simple.

Did I just state the obvious?

You might be wondering, that’s ridiculous, of course, I’m going to write about stuff I know!

Here’s the thing, when I started on Medium back in early June 2021, I thought I’d craft stories about my life experiences and the money would flow freely.

It certainly did — to the tune of $0.03.

While I was certainly writing about what I knew — my life, there was a piece missing from my plan. I hadn’t factored in the audience I was trying to build.

As a complete novice, they had no idea who I was. It took me many months to realize I should start writing with others in mind.

Another thing, I started doing is just the opposite of my headliner. I’ve been dabbling in stuff I’ve got little experience with (like AI) and other topics I tend to shy away from (like politics).

For me, that’s about diving into areas I’m less than comfortable with — to see where my creativity takes me.

Then there are my verses.

As a spoken word poet, feminism, social justice and decolonization of my beloved Borikén are close to my heart. That will continue.
